Not Quite Ready...
The days are shorter and the kids are back to school. The nights are cooler and leaves are already falling off the oaks in my yard. I know what's coming but I am not quite ready fall, just yet.

The Third Floral - Tulips
Here is the third in my series of spring florals. This is another commissioned piece by the same customer that purchases "Spring Gift" and "Iceland Poppies".As a set, they will look so lovely matted and framed together. I can wait for her to send me a picture once she has them hanging up!

Paris ACEO

In Greek mthology Paris is the son of King Priam and Hecuba. While pregnant Hecuba dreams she will give birth to a flaming torch and this is seen as a sign that the child will cause the fall of Troy. Paris is raised by Agelaus, a herdsman who is entrusted to murder the child by Priam to prevent the prophecy coming true. Later Paris is taken to Mount Olympus to judge who is the most beautiful, Hera, Athene or Aphrodite. Athene offers him Helen of Troy if he chooses her and he agrees, even though Helen is already married to Menelaus. Paris has to steal Helen (though in some versions she goes willingly and is in love with him) and take her to Troy, so beginning the Trojan war. Later in the war Paris kills Achilles with an arrow to the heel.

Hector ACEO

In mythology Hector is a Trojan prince, brother of Paris, son of King Priam. Though against it initially, he is one of the greatest fighters of the war. He is killed by Achilles and his body desecrated in vengeance for the death of Patrocles.
Helen of Troy ACEO
ACEO, 2.5 x 3.5 inches, watercolour and gouache, 2008.
A portrait of Helen of Troy. She was married to Menelaus, King of Sparta. She was promised to a Trojan prince, Paris, by Aphrodite - some stories say she was abducted by him, some that she went willingly. In either case, it was the catalyst for the Trojan war.

Iceland Poppies
"Iceland Poppies"This is a commissioned piece. My buyer purchased a painting that I did in a similar fashion, earlier this year, but it had yellow narcissus. She decided she wanted two more to all blend together.
She's thrilled with how this turned out - just the way she had pictured it. The far left pink poppy will be the color of the third painting of tulips.

Still Life Study
My mothers pear tree is full of beautiful pears this year, so I decided to try and paint a few of them, and learn how to paint crystal, very difficult in deed, come to find out, But this study helped me to understand some of the mistakes etc.

Achilles ACEO

A portrait of Achilles, a hero of the Trojan war. He was the son of the nymph Thetis and Peleus, the king of the Myrmidons. His friend/lover Patroclus was killed by Hector and Achilles revenged himself by kiling Hector and desecrating his body. He was later killed when Hector's brother Paris shot him with an arrow in the heel.

Patroclus ACEO
ACEO, 2.5 x 3.5 inches, watercolour and gouache, 2008.A portrait of Patroclus, in Greek mythology the best friend/lover of Achilles. During the Trojan war he dresses in Achilles armour and is killed by Hector. Achilles revenges his death by killing Hector and desecrating his body by dragging it behind his chariot.

Saint Rita ACEO
ACEO, 2.5 x 3.5 inches, watercolour and gouache, 2008.
Saint Rita is the patron saint of lost and impossible causes. She became a nun after the death of her violent and abusive husband and two sons. Initially she was refused entry to the convent as she was not a virgin. However, the story goes that she was miraculously transported into the locked convent one night by Saint John the Baptist, St. Augustine and St. Nicolas of Torentino. The nuns allowed her to stay. She is represented with a thorn and wound in her forehead as, while praying one day, she asked to suffer as her saviour had - a thorn fell from the crown of the crucifix above her and wounded her head. She died in 1457 aged 76.
Dutch Iris Flower Challenge
"Dutch Iris" 2.5"x3.5" watercolorThis format is also known as ACEO (Art Card Editions and Originals). I took the reference photo 7 years ago so I'm glad to have finally painted from it for my watercolor group's flower challenge. This iris was simply begging to be painted with the its beautiful contrasting colors of yellow and purple along with the ridges on the tips of its petals that fold along the tips for added feature.
