Medusa ACEO

ACEO, 2.5 x 3.5 inches, watercolor and gouache, 2008.
Medusa was a sea nymph, the most beautiful of three sisters called the Gorgons. After making love to Poseidon in a temple dedicated to Athena, she was transformed by an angry Athena into a monstrous creature with snakes for hair. Anyone who looked upon her face was turned to stone. She was killed as she slept by Perseus who then cut off her head and used it as a weapon.

These are pale yellow English roses, painted in watercolor, and inspired by the roses created by the great David Austin. This one is available on ebay, but I have a series of them on my web site. I love painting these - they are so vintage-looking.

Here is the finished dog portrait. I posted the rough sketch last week. I tightened up the painting, trying to keep the backgound fairly loose and impressionistic. The client's happy!

Domitian was Roman Emperor from 81 to 96AD. He was the last of the Flavian Dynasty and became Emperor after the deaths of his father Vespasian and brother Titus. His great passions were the arts and the games and he presided over them wearing a gold diadem and purple robes. He made many enemies within the Senate and in his later years was prone to paranoia . He was assassinated aged 44 by being stabbed.
