This is a dark version of the Velveteen Rabbit, actually I don't even know VR's story, for all I know it inspired Danny Darko.
VR was by Margery Williams, in 1922. There is a beautiful edition of it illustrated by Michael Hague, whose watercolor illustrations I've always found inspiring.
