Gloriana

A portrait of Elizabeth I. Edmund Spencer's poem "The Faerie Queen" featured a character based on her called Gloriana and it bacame a popular nickname for her. Elizabeth ruled for 45 years between 1558 and 1603.

4 x 6 inches. watercolour, gouache and gold ink, 2008.A portrait of the ill-fated Mary, Queen of Scots. Executed aged 44 in 1587 for plotting to overthrow Elizabeth after being held a virtual prisoner for 18 years after being forced to abdicate the throne of Scotland to her son in 1568.
