Sarracenia Purpurea

10.5 x 7.5 inches, watercolor, 2009.

One of the carnivorous plants from my collection, this is Sarracenia Purpurea, or the purple pitcher plant. The leaves grow in a rosette and form pitchers with flared collars that catch rain water. The nside of the leaves have small downward-pointing wet hairs which insects slide down to drown in the water below. The plants then take nutrition from the insects.

King Priam

ACEO, 2.5 x 3.5 inches, watercolor and gouache, 2009.

In mythology Priam was King of Troy. He had fathered over 50 children, among them Paris, Hector, Cassandra and Laodice. After Achilles kills Hector and refuses to return the body, Priam leaves the safety of troy and enters Achilles camp to beg for the return of his son's body. Achilles relents and Hector's body is given a proper funeral. Priam is later killed by Achilles son Neoptolemus during the sacking of Troy.

Hello my friends! I've made a second self portrait attempt and feel much more successful this time around. Using a photograph didn't hurt either. 6 x 5 inches

Wabash Purple and White Iris

I love the name of this Iris --- "Wabash Iris". It reminds me of an Iris in a tuxedo. This one makes me very happy, because it is definitely in the direction that I want to go. It makes me feel like I'm making progress. I never realized how complimentary purple and green could be together.

I'd love for you to visit my watercolor blog at http://paintinginwatercolor.blogspot.com

30 Days of Self-Portraits?

My friend, Peter Yesis, is doing 30 days of self portraits on his blog and feeling inspired I've painted one. :) It resembles me but I'm going to have to try again for a better likeness. This was pretty quick, about an hour and I held the mirror in my hand which does not facilitate painting. Anyone up for a self-portrait challenge? You don't have to post more than one.

Measures about 2 inches square.

Gabriele

5 x 7 inches, watercolor and gouache, 2009.

This was a portrait commission. The client wanted something romantic and suggested something reminiscent of J.W. Waterhouse, as we are both fans of his work.

One hour watercolor portrait

This is from Wetcanvas' All Media Event weekly paint which I used to be a regular at but now only join in occasionally. Anyway, I had an unplanned day off today and decided to paint this 1 year old boy. I only gave myself an hour but went over about 10 minutes. I really enjoy doing these little watercolor portraits and I've got a little collection piled on my desk. ;)

She Loves Her Baby

Orchid

"Orchid"6x6 watercolor
I am currently visiting in Southern California partly business but mostly pleasure - the pleasure of being warm, surrounded by food I enjoy and of course friends and family.

I had the opportunity to paint a quick commission for a business which I was pleased to do on my trip. Here is the painting framed and ready for delivery! I think it will be a nice addition to their intimate lobby. It's a business by two sisters. One makes silk orchid arrangements and the other has an orchid nursery.

Happy Easter to our Daily Watercolors artists and readers!
