American Butterflies


Today I decided to take a break from landscapes and paint one of my favorite subjects.
These are all common American butterflies that you might see in your yard or garden. The size of this piece is 7.5 x 10 inches.

Perseus

Perseus was the slayer of the Gorgon, Medusa. He was given a shield by Athena, a sword by Hermes and a helmet of invisibility by Hades. He looked at Medusa's reflection in his shield in order to slay her, as her gaze could turn you into stone.

Back from Charles Reid workshop

Hades ACEO

Hades was the brother of Zeus and Poseidon, and ruler of the underworld. He ruled over the dead, was feared by men, was seen as unpitying and stern but, at the same time, just.

Little Masterpiece


Another one to add to my series of young painters. This was painted on a 9 x 12 piece of Aquaboard (fka Clayboard Textured). It was my first time trying it and I really like it. It's different because the paint doesn't really soak in and if you have to correct, which I did, the paint lifts off really easily.

Eros ACEO

In early greek mythology Eros was the god of lust and love, especially love between men. Later his role changed to that of being an attendant of his mother, Aphrodite, and directing love into mortals.

The Story Book after William Bouguereau


I painted with a friend today who encouraged me to give this a try. It's after The Story Book by William Adolphe Bouguereau. It was really fun. A great exercise. 11 x 7.5 on Arches 140 lb. cold press paper.

Diomedes ACEO


ACEO, 2.5 x 3.5 inches, watercolour and gouache, 2008.
Diomedes is another of the heroes of the Trojan war. He was King of Argos, and one of the suitors of Helen. He is great friends with Odysseus and both are favoured by the goddess Athena. Later in the war they steal the Palladium (a statue of Athena) after they have been told that Troy will not fall until the statue has left it's walls. He was also one of the warriors hidden in the Trojan horse.

Andromache ACEO

ACEO, 2.5 x 3.5 inches, watercolour and gouache, 2008.

Andromache is another character from David Gemmell's Troy novel, Lord of the Silver Bow. She is strong, feisty, proud and bisexual, as well as being nifty with a bow and arrow. She has strong feelings for Helikaon though she has been promised to his friend Hector, a prince of Troy.
